1985 K100RS - FYK

I bought this bike from a local guy who had bought a few parts for his K1100RS from me.  It was his bike before he bought the K1100RS.  He took it apart with the intention of rehabbing it as a project but never got around to it.  He sold it to me after it had sat under a tarp for a few years and realized he'd never get around it. It came as this:

And a bunch of parts:

I didn't know if I was going to use it for parts and bring it back to life but after going through all of the parts, with the exception of some fairing hardware, it seemed to all be there.

As a 1985, it's an "FYK" - Finest Year K. Many people refer to 85s as FYKs as they supposedly hot hotter cams and were about 50 pounds lighter than the later ones.

It had spent a few years outside under a tarp in the Seattle rain so the gas tank had about two gallons in it - one gallon gas, one water.  I decided that it was worth it to clean out the tank and replace the fuel pump and vibration mounting ring to see if I could get it running.

Being a K bike, with a cleaned out tank and some fresh gas, it started right up.  Since the fairing was in decent shape and it only had 52k on it, I decided to fully service it (including a spline lube,) put a few miles on it and then sell it.  Aside from servicing it the only thing I did was add an amber "Cyclops" aux light under the headlight for conspicuity.

The license plate was from Buckingham BMW which was the Seattle BMW dealer from the late 70s to 1995 until it was sold, renamed Ride West BMW and moved from Greenlake to Lake City Way. I kept the license plate frame as as  souvenir since Buckingham BMW is where I test rode the first BMW I ever rode, a 1987 Marakesh Red K75S. It was that test ride that got me hooked on K bikes although I wouldn't actually own one for another nine years.

And here are the pictures I used to sell it on Craig's List:
