When I swapped in SMD LED bulbs for my brake and tail light bulbs, I used a white LED bulb for the tail light since, to be legal, you need to illuminate your license plate with white light.  However, a white LED bulb behind a red lens ends up looking kind of pinkish.  I swapped in a red SMD LED bulb for the tail light and added some of these white LED license plate bolts (about $3.50/pair on Fleabay) to illuminate the license plate.
