Early K bikes came with a
"full-sized" battery compartment. 1994 and later K1100s came
with a "half-sized" battery compartment.
Two of the more popular batteries
among K bike owners are the WestCo 12V30 (full-sized)
and the Odyssey PC680 (half-sized.)
I recently decided to save some
money and weight by trying out a Big Crank ETX15L sealed "no
maintenance" AGM battery and it's been working just fine in
my K100. It cost me $71.95 shipped from
Battery Mart. It weighs only 11.5 pounds vs. the
23 pounds of a 12V30 or 15 pounds of a PC680.
It is shorter than the K bike
battery compartment so in order to hold it down I flipped
over the battery hold down bracket and placed a 1/8" thick rectangle of rubber between the bracket and the
battery. The threads on the hold down bolts were not
long enough but I overcame that by adding four M6 washers
under the head of each bolt.
Note that, given its dimensions,
it will not work in a 94-on K1100, only K bikes with the
larger battery compartment.
As mentioned, it seems to be
working fine in my non-ABS K100. Given that K bike ABS
control units can be sensitive to low voltage and fault, the
ETX15L may or may not have adequate power for an ABS
equipped K bike. However, my hunch is that it would.
If you try this battery in an ABS K bike, then please send
an email with your results and I will update this page.
